Additional Description More Details

Since 1907, Bristol and Gloucestershire schools have competed for the Woodcock Shield in an under-15s football tournament founded by Colonel Henry Woodcock to encourage competitive sport amongst the young. Bristol sports enthusiast Steve Sutor, inspired by a photograph on his grandparents’ piano and the memories of his father Ray, who was part of the Wells Road team which won the trophy in 1940, has spent ten years tracking down the names and photographs of the winning teams recorded on the Shield. Many of these participants went on to become professional footballers, others have never forgotten the thrill of running out on to the pitch at the Bristol City or Rovers grounds in the final. This unique, lavishly illustrated book presents those line-ups for the first time, as well as a host of other pictures, stories and reminiscences from competitors past and present, to bring a neglected part of the West’s football history vividly to life. 978-1-908326-49-2 230 x 210mm Softback 176pp
