A HISTORY AND CELEBRATION OF THE PLAYHOUSE THEATRE
WESTON-SUPER-MARE
Samantha Ball
September 2019 marked the 50th anniversary since The Playhouse Theatre, Weston-super-Mare welcomed its first audiences following the devastating fire of August 1964. A History & Celebration of The Playhouse Theatre tells its extraordinary story, the early years, the impact of the fire, subsequent temporary closure and re-opening, and how the Playhouse has become the much-loved theatre of today.
With many star performers having taken the stage, the Playhouse has a rich history, but there have also been many times in the past when the theatre was threatened with closure. The book takes the reader from the humble beginnings of a disused market hall covered with hessian drapes, through the years of highs and lows to the devastating fire. It explores how, through hard times, the theatre prevailed to establish itself as the town’s premier home of live entertainment. The story is enlivened by memories and anecdotes of people who have worked and still work at the Playhouse, and who cherish the special bond that exists between stage and staff.
